Total Closet Domination.

I've always had an issue with keeping my closet clean. I think it has to do with the fact that ever since I can remember every morning, I try on multiple outfits before deciding which to wear one. Anyway... In a recent conversation with my bestie, HB, she mentioned the fact that when we were in high school she'd come over only to find mounds of clothing and shoes piled chest high in my closet. [I mean it. I have a real problem.] This was just the motivation I needed to finally take on my closet. Here is what I was up against...
1) It's tiny. These people LIVED 30 for 365! (if you know what I'm talking about... I love you.)
2) I have way too many clothes. TONS of stuff I don't wear. It's a crime.
3) I suck at putting things away. (There are constantly clothes thrown about.)

So, this past weekend... between amazing breakfast at Oddfellows and being on field for the halftime show at the Super Bowl... (such a(n event) name dropper...) I gave my closet the one-two punch right between the eyes.

I have this thing where I want everything to have a place, but if I can't see everything then I forget I have it. I've purchased so many of those clear shoe boxes, but I hat using them. They end up hiding those cute, multi-colored strappy pumps that I HAD to have.

The first order of business was to get everything out where I could see it. Then, I installed a couple shelves (Scott cut them for me), and I organized my jewelry (which is usually in a heap on the night stand).

S said that the closet looks like a little shop. I took that as a major compliment. I'm so excited to have a clean closet. I asked Bomb if she wanted to sleep in there with me. She was in, but S said he'd get lonely without his girls so... we'll shop there instead.

If it wasn't posted, it didn't happen.

In keeping with the theme of my previous post, I've noticed that people seem to think that since my online presence sort of paused in time... that my actual life paused in time. For example, people keep asking "how is the house coming?" which I find to be extremely thoughtful (I'm always amazed at how thoughtful people can be. I wish I were more that way). Here's the thing with our house. It's been "finished" for like... 9 months; however, since I didn't post "finished" pictures...it didn't happen.

So, I'd love to have some nice "finished" pictures taken. Maybe one of the amazing photographers I know could help me out with that... huh? Whatdoyasay??

He is Risen and we are home

In other news, S and I have been on the hunt for a new church home. We've attended a few without the special you're home feeling like the one we've always had for Christ United Methodist Church in Plano. (To be fair, we've spent our entire lives at CUMC, so it's to be expected that it will take a while to find one that can even compare.)

Our list of qualifications is this:
1. Must have a decent sized 20-something congregation.
2. Must have programs in place for our age group.
3. Must challenge us spiritually, while making us feel at home.
That's pretty much it...

This past Sunday, we attended Highland Park United Methodist for the first time. It might not be fair to judge the other churches (ha) based on their any given Sunday service when we attended the Easter service at HPUMC, but we loved it. Decent sized 20 something congregation-check. Programs in place for our age group-check. Challenged us spiritually-if Rev. Craig's service this past Sunday is any indication-check and check.

Although, I have to say, that I entered into the service on Sunday already challenging myself. The story of the resurrection has always been a reassuring, yet challenging one for me. Among other things, Rev. Craig talked about the importance of reflection and action–a perfect message for us. If that wasn't enough, part of their offering goes to Central Dallas Ministries, an amazing organization (that I love) doing incredible things for our struggling neighbors here in Dallas.

We're excited to learn more about HPUMC, meet some new people, and get plugged in.

This is fairly long overdue, but here are a few pictures of the progress on the house taken during this past weekend. (In case you need reminding of what this place looked like before we bought it..., and here, and here) We had S's family to our house this year. It was a lot of fun, and thank you again for all the wedding presents... I think we used them ALL. And, ... we got to break out the Piland Silver, only used for the most special occasions–and that it was!

The place is definitely not finished, which is why I haven't posted pictures. We're busy picking out fabric for the living room furniture (a sofas and two large, armless chairs), trying to find something awe inspiring to go above the sofa on the wall, looking for the perfect dining room rug, and searching for the right table to go in the corner to elevate the perfect lamp... Of course, we've found all said pieces; however, they are pricey, pricey. So, for now we visit our champagne items, laugh about our beer budget, and deal with the bare walls.

No, I'm not pregnant. But, I sort of want one of these (the bike/stroller, not the baby). When I see things like this, it makes me even more excited to become a parent one day. I think there is a fear that exists (among women, at least) that as soon as you have a baby you will be confined to the house, only to leave for doctor's appointments and the occasional lame play date. I'm a fan of all these slings, baby backpacks, strollers con bike seats, etc. Bring those babies out!! Let's see 'em!

Trim and Windows and Tile, Oh My!

I thought I'd try something a little different. A full blown tour of the house and its progress. They have trimmed out a significant portion of the house, put in the majority of the windows and started the tile. It's all very exciting! The video's a little long, so I won't blame you if you get tired of it, but there is a nice shot of Scott, him mom, and sister at the end. This was filmed on Thanksgiving Day. How fitting!

Progress has been made!! We had the whole house sprayed with foam insulation, wood floor was laid in the rest of the house, it's been sheetrocked, and now the texture has been put on the walls. (Not to mention all of the electrical and HVAC, since I last posted.) We're rollin' right along. Hooray!

Our house is coming right along! My brother-in-law, Chad worked his foam insulation magic on our old, drafty house. I can't wait to reap the rewards, a warm home and lowered heating bills this winter. Looks pretty awesome, reminds me of Ghost Busters when the Stay Puff Marshmellow Man explodes in NYC. Nice.

Piland Pad Progress

We went over to the house yesterday to check on the framing and make sure all of the doors were in the right places for our bathroom addition. SO EXCITED to see the house coming together. I was so nervous about vaulting the ceiling in the living/dining room, and I think it looks incredible. I got chills the moment I walked in. And, they were able to incorporate the dormer window on the front of the house. I'm in awe of how beautiful it is.

My sister was there to offer (really good) furniture placement advice. This isn't her first rodeo. She's beautifully decorated several of their houses. Also, I think we've finally decided how we want the kitchen to look (cabinets, sink, hardware, appliances–everything). This is major progress for us.

They are supposed to be finishing all of the electrical and plumbing next week, so the photos from that might not be too exciting. I'll share them all the same. Think good thoughts for a smooth wiring of the house. (!)

The Dirtiest House on the Block

At this point, they had removed all of the sheet rock, ripped out the appliances and cabinets, and generally made a mess. Feast your eyes on the wreckage! Also, the last few pictures are of treasures found in the attic and garage. SO COOL.

Cliff Dwelling

I try to limit this blog to only one or two personally-focused entries a month, but there is something just too exciting to sit on. Oh, wait! It's October! Hooray! We bought a house! Actually, we bought it about two weeks ago.

It's an old Tudor, built in 1925, and it's only had two owners. The before pictures can be overwhelming, but it has incredible bones. We won't be moving in until January or so, because we're doing some pretty extensive renovations (adding a bathroom, completely remodeling the kitchen, doing some exterior work, landscaping, refinishing floors, electrical, HVAC, the list is long).

We totally fell in love with the neighborhood. North Oak Cliff has it all, rolling hills (the likes of which I didn't know existed in Dallas), huge trees, beautiful houses, great people, tradition-it's a true community. Also, I am ancestrally tied to Oak Cliff. My maternal great-grandparents lived there, as did my paternal great-grandmother, both sets of grandparents, my parents, and most of my parents' friends. It's sort of amazing to think that our kids will learn to ride their bikes on the same streets that my parents did.

Anyway, we've been talking to as many "Cliff Dwellers" as we can find and spending every free moment in Bishop Arts District. We could not be more excited!! Can't wait to get in and throw a big party. Everyone is invited.

This is a little late, but our good friends Derrick and Chandra were married on September 6th. The wedding was GORGEOUS with loads of personal touches. She was stunningly beautiful, and he cried when he first saw her making her way down the aisle-my recipe for a perfect wedding.

PLUS... they had a SUPER FUN photo booth. Any opportunity for to be silly-we'll take it.

In short, there has been, over the last few years, an onslaught of teen fashion bloggers. They bring reviews, trend updates, and an entrepreneurial spirit that is far from that of a novice. Brands have taken note and are inviting these mavens to design for them. More power to you (young) ladies.

I secretly want to be quoted in The New York Times more than almost anything. Well, yesterday (the Sunday addition!) my stud friend was. I am proud of Carter everyday, but reading the first sentence of this article brought be straight to tears. I mean do-not-pass-go, do-not-collect-$200-type tears. Not that he's not already a celeb, but this is SO COOL. It will be roughly 48 days before my friend comes home, and I CANNOT WAIT. God bless our men in uniform.

Outliers, Part II

There are going to be three posts, or parts, on this book that technically only has two. I attribute my liberal use of “parts” to the fact that I am a poster child for concerted cultivation and entitlement.

Thoughts on “Part II”

1. Practical vs. Analytical Intelligence - Nothing new here, really, however calling out that practical intelligence can, at times, be the only factor differentiating you from the next bookish gal was a good reminder.
2. Concerted Cultivation vs. natural growth – As someone who plans on “creating a functional adult” (as my friend, Jill, says) of my own some day, this was especially interesting. I am definitely the product of Concerted Cultivation, and I strongly believe that it is the best way to raise a child. I am aware, however, that in some cases it is the child that dictates the parenting style. A parent with more than one child might employ one parenting style on one of their children and the opposite parenting style on the other. Also, as a member of the generation known for our sense of entitlement, it was refreshing to hear the term being used in a positive manner.
3. Unlikely heroes are actually more likely to be successful due to their beginnings instead of in spite of them.
4. Autonomy, complexity, and connection between effort and reward all make work meaningful and satisfying – It is amazing what ownership does for one’s outlook on work.
5. “[Success] arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities.” – This assumption takes ‘luck’ out of the equation, and quite honestly, I think that’s hooey.
6. Working hard, asserting yourself, using your noggin and your imagination will help you make your way at work - This is how we “make our way” in relationships as well, isn't it?

Gladwell’s Three Lessons of Joe Flom inspired me to write my own lessons (just for fun): The Three Lessons for Account Planners

Lesson Number One: The Importance of Being Completely Consumed by Something Other than Account Planning
It has been my observation that account planners focused solely on account planning are not dedicated; they’re boring.

Lesson Number Two: Demographic Luck
Many of us came into advertising at a time when the demand was high, but the expectations were not clearly defined. I would argue that the “magic” time for account planners to be born is 1983.

Lesson Number Three: The Internet and Meaningful Work
The Internet and our relationship with it has taught us the importance of connections, and we are constantly searching for those in our work.

I know, I know. I'm the last person on the planet to read Gladwell's "new" book. I mean, I bought it at Kroger for God's sake. I'm a third of the way through it and I'm reserving judgment until the fin.

However, here are a few of my thoughts so far.

The idea of how the way we group children by ability at a very young age, and how it can hinder their potential for high achievement is concerning. I am just imagining my generation of baby makers calculating their pregnancies to be sure their child is given every advantage in athletics, academics, and life in general. (Sidebar: I was listening to an NPR interview with Christine Cosgrove, author of Normal at Any Cost: Tall Girls, Short Boys, and the Medical Industry's Quest to Manipulate Height. I was astonished to hear about the lengths (I'm so punny) some parents are willing to go to give their children "physical normalcy". Sad.)
The concept of 10,000 hours is interesting, but coupling it with factors such as circumstance and luck, to be frank, seems elementary. To me, it's obvious that those who are given more opportunities; more resources will be more likely to realize "their potential". However, calculating my 10,000 hour mark as an account planner is fun, all the same. I have it down to the hour (in theory).

Well, I've awoken from my blogging hibernation. I mean that is really the only viable excuse, right!? The real reason for my blog abandonment is that work has gotten nuts-o. No slow down here. And thank God, right?! I mean there are people who would kill to be stressing about their deadlines right now. I am SO grateful to have them. Every single one.
Other things contributing to my jovial mood: it is BEAUTIFUL in big D right now. This is by far my favorite time of year in Texas. The sun is shining, we hover at 70-75 degrees, and sandals start popping out everywhere with their freshly painted toenails. Not to mention that we are in the home stretch for our dear friend Carter returning from Afghanistan. June will come faster than we think.
It’s this revelation of spring that awakens and refreshes me. I could not be more excited about all that is in store.

Although it is just another day, I can't help but feel like today is a holiday. Apparently I'm not the only one who feels that today is special for some reason. This is also interesting... My niece Riley's birthday is 5/4/05, and Gray's birthday is 8/7/08. There is something spooky about dates... very spooky. What about how I was born on Father's day and my husband was born on Christmas... I think I should call it a day.

House on the corner

Saturday morning I woke up feeling like I hadn't slept in a week. or the week before that if I'm honest.) I don't know what it was about this week, but I was whipped by the time the weekend came. Anyways, I woke up at 7 am exhausted. Mom and I were headed to the church to volunteer with House on the Corner. The shift was from 7:30 am to 1:30. It was all in all a severe beating, between the labor and the 105 degree heat. When 1:30 came we were so tired that we drove home in silence and got straight into the pool. I enjoyed the work, and I hope that the beautiful home goes to a deserving family. Everyone deserves a nice place to live. I was asleep in my current place to live by 9 pm. Whipped.

Birthdays, boys, and baseball

As many of you know, Scott and I have recently had the pleasure of landing back in the proverbial 'nest,' or at least the proverbial nest previously occupied by me. (We moved in with my parents.) I was a little nervous at first about how Daddy would react to having another man in the house. (Having had 3 daughters and no sons) Anyways, all of my worries were put to rest last night when I walked in on a heartwarming sight. Scott was on one couch and Daddy on the other watching nervously as the Rangers pull out another win. There is something so special about the bond of men and baseball. I think that simple image is one that I'll never forget. Two of the three most important men in my life (Harrison was not present) sharing a moment that at first thought seems insignificant.

Today is Daddy's birthday, and we surprised him with Rangers tickets to tonights game. I can't wait to see his excitement and to experience such an emotional pastime with my Dad. I love you Daddy. Happy Birthday!

How incredible is this gallery? Wild animals are just the most incredible thing when captured in photographs. The voyeurism that takes place almost makes me feel uncomfortable. We shouldn't be there, yet we are and the animals are no worse for it. I love the use of light and the way he structures the pictures to tell a story about the animals. Just breathtaking. (My Mom will love this.)

My beautiful friend Heylee just got a new car. She had to say goodbye to a dear friend when she traded 'Little Red' in for her new, shiny, sporty car. I still remember the day Bamby D surprised Hale with Little Red almost 8 years ago. It was after dinner at T.G.I. Friday's. There was a big red bow and everything. It was the sort of surprise that normally only Santa can deliver. Anyway, Heylee has a new ride and a new car to make memories with. (Like the time we were pulled over in Little Red after curfew and the cops separated us to see if out stories matched up about where we were going, which they didn't.) But, like the memories of our adolescence, Little Red will also not be forgotten. Welcome to the family 'Minnie'.
